The creator of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, became the father of a baby girl, reports Business Insider.
"Priscilla and I are delighted to welcome our daughter Max into this world," Zuckerberg wrote in his post on Facebook. His wife also shared the happy news on social media.
“I am more than excited to introduce you to our Max. It fills us with hope and inspiration to join others in creating a better future," said Priscilla Chan.
The young family also wrote a long letter to their daughter expressing their intention to donate 99% of their shares in Facebook - currently valued at around $45 billion - "to develop human potential and achieve equality".
The two will found a new organization under the name Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, which will donate funds to non-governmental organizations and engage in personalized learning, discovering cures for diseases, better connecting people around the world, and building strong and healthy communities.
The young parents specify that the donations will be made while they are alive. Zuckerberg remains at the helm of his company and retains most of his voting rights in making decisions about its development.
"We know our contribution is small against all the resources and talent going into these areas. But we want to do what we can along with many others," the letter reads.
We can expect detailed information about the initiative's activities in the coming months, after the couple has established the rhythm of their new family and both parents have returned from maternity and paternity leave.
The founder of Facebook and his wife received congratulations from Bill and Melinda Gates, Bono and other prominent philanthropists. However, the family's noble decision is no surprise. Five years ago, Zuckerberg signed a pledge to donate more of his fortune.
