Restless sleep in children - how to help them with homeopathy

child sleep

Often in the period of childhood - infancy, the age of primary elongation 5-8 years and the puberty period, parents face the problem called "restless sleep". It can have different expressions – the child has difficulty falling asleep, does not want to sleep alone, has nightmares, urinates, etc. Although less often, sleep disorders can be an expression of organic pathology as a consequence of acute and chronic diseases, reactions to drug treatment, etc. This requires the doctor to have in-depth knowledge not only of the specific pathology, but also of the child's physiology and stages of psycho-emotional development, in order to refine the diagnosis.

The treatment of these seemingly harmless, physiological sleep disorders is imperative, because the child is a developing organism that must be placed in an environment that is optimal for its performance. It is well known that the levels of somatotropic, thyroid-releasing hormones are directly dependent on the phases and depth of sleep.

Here is the normal duration of sleep for a child depending on his age:

  • infant – 14-17 hours; 1-3 years – 12-14 hours/mandatory afternoon nap/;
  • 3-5 years – 12 hours / 1-2 hours afternoon break/;
  • 6-10 years – 9-10 hours of sleep.

Naturally, these norms should not be canonized, but they are a useful, if rough guide for hypo- or hypersomnia.

 Therapy should be complex:
Conversation with the parents and the child, ensuring a proper daily regimen of rest and workloads/physical and mental/;
Complete and rational nutrition
Homeopathic medicines do not have the side effects of narcoleptic and sedative allopathic medicines. There is neither dependence nor habituation to them; they do not disturb our own daily rhythm, on the contrary, they lead to its optimization.

We currently have a wide range of homeopathic medicines with a pronounced tropism for children's sleep disorders, but the most commonly used medicines are:

Ignatia – medication for psychosomatization of the problem. As a result of an emotional shock, the child becomes restless and capricious, usually this is combined with a lump in the throat, abdominal pain, appearing in situations of negative emotions - going to school, unpleasant chores, etc. These complaints are paradoxical in nature and when distracted disappear as suddenly as they appeared. The child becomes restless, has difficulty falling asleep or wakes up in the middle of the night. These manifestations are accompanied by pronounced nervous-vegetative symptoms - pallor, tremors, pollakiuria, lower dyspeptic. He quickly loses faith in himself, doubts his abilities, in stressful situations he falls into a stupor.

Chamomilla - infants and young children who are impressionable, quick reactors, with a low threshold of irritability, difficult to tolerate pain and angry when contradicted respond best to the medication. Often the trigger factor is a harmless specific ailment - functional colospasm; difficult erupting teeth, which aggravate their clinical appearance. They are usually relieved by a sudden change of rhythm, movement with linear acceleration/ car, strong rocking of the infant/ There are also manifestations of exudative diathesis in young children, frequent dyspeptic manifestations.

Stramonium – one of the main medications for parasomnia. It is difficult for the child to fall asleep - fear of the dark and loneliness, even after falling asleep he is startled in his sleep, has nightmares, sleep is accompanied by gesticulations and delirium.

Hyosciamus niger  - close to the above medication, but children usually have aggressive, quarrelsome behavior, with many spastic manifestations resembling Ignatia. Their sleep is restless, interrupted by frequent delirium and stereotyped movements.

Pretty Woman - the child is hypersensitive to external stimuli - hyperesthetic/ noise, light, temperature/, often startles in sleep, sits in bed drenched in sweat with a staring gaze, reliving his nightmare dream. Speech is incoherent, unintelligible. Often, such a clinical picture accompanies febrile convulsions in children.

China - also a hypersensitive child, but angry, with unpleasant manners, often during the examination he is a "shame for the parents" - he runs, hides, kicks and bites. Motor restlessness in sleep, with manifestations of brikomania, enuresis. Parasitosis is often found.

Potassium phosphoricum - medication for sleep disorders due to mental overwork; the child has poor concentration, it is difficult to cope with the study load despite the effort shown; he often complains of a headache at the end of the day; sleep is superficial and also motor restless; sometimes there is somnambulism.

    Arnica montana – here fatigue is present again, but it is physical, not so much with cramps as with pains in the muscle groups. They are observed in children "unloaded" from the mental stress of the school, as a result of sick ambitions of the parents for sports achievements.

With correct, well-chosen homeopathic therapy, with a normalized daily routine for the child, the pediatrician - homeopath can overcome this unpleasant suffering for both children and parents and ensure his little patients a full and healthy sleep - vitally necessary for harmonious physical development and neuropsychic maturation.
